Why Index Bloat Is Expensive Rather Than Merely Untidy

It is worth being concrete about why index composition matters so much here, because the instinct in most organisations is that more indexed pages must be better. On a marketplace the opposite is usually true, and the reasons are economic rather than aesthetic.

Search engines allocate a finite amount of crawling to any site, based roughly on how important and how responsive they judge it to be. On a catalogue of hundreds of thousands of URLs, that allocation is spent constantly. Marketplace reporting fails in a specific and predictable way: the numbers that are easiest to produce are the ones least connected to the business. Total ranking keywords is the worst offender, because on a large catalogue it rises almost automatically as pages are generated, whether or not anything improved.

The measure that actually tells you what is happening is position distribution: how many of your ranking terms sit in the top three, the top ten, positions eleven to twenty, and beyond. A healthy programme shows terms migrating upward through those bands over quarters. A site with the classic marketplace disease shows an enormous and growing tail with a static top, which is exactly the pattern that produces impressive keyword counts and flat revenue.
