A/B Testing Programs: Experimentation With the Discipline of a System
Most A/B testing fails before it starts: tests on pages without traffic for significance, hypotheses that were guesses in costume, and no log of what was learned. Testing theatre, generating activity and noise.
I build testing as a program: hypotheses sourced from evidence (recordings, surveys, funnel data), prioritised by impact times confidence times ease, sized honestly against your traffic, and logged so learning compounds. Where volume does not support splits, sequential testing with converging evidence replaces them, honestly labelled as such.
How I Run It
Every test traces to observed behaviour: a recording, a survey answer, a funnel cliff. Ideas without evidence go to the backlog, not the calendar.
Sample size calculated before launch, no peeking, no calling winners at 60 percent probability. Bad statistics is how programs lose credibility and budgets.
Every test logged: hypothesis, result, decision, insight. Twenty tests in, the ledger predicts winners better than any guru.
A winning pattern gets templatised across similar pages, not left as a one-page trophy.
What you get:
- Testing readiness assessment: traffic, tooling, tracking
- Prioritised hypothesis backlog with evidence trails
- Test specs: design, sizing, success criteria
- The learning ledger and quarterly insight review
- Team training so the program outlives the engagement
What tools do you use? Whatever fits your stack and budget: GA4 experiments pathways, VWO, Convert, or server-side setups. The discipline matters more than the tool.
We have low traffic. Can we test at all? Honest answer: classic splits, rarely. Sequential testing, user testing, and recording-driven fixes give low-traffic sites most of the value without the statistical theatre.
